School Feedings

For Haitian children, nutrition is as important as learning how to read and write. In a country where over two million people cannot cover their basic food needs, feeding children is number 1 priority. Attending school is not just an opportunity to learn, but their only chance to eat a hot meal. The School Feeding Program is used to encourage kids to go attend school and also to protect some of the most vulnerable children, alleviating short-term hunger, improving nutrition and cognition of children and transferring income to families. In some poor households, the school meal represents the only meal for the day until the next school day.

School Uniform

Many children miss out on an education  because they can’t afford the uniforms required to attend school. School uniforms in the developing world are very expensive during back-to-school season Therefore, those that can’t afford them are not able to go. 

Teachers’ Salaries

Salary scale:

We pay our teachers a little bit more but it is merely impossible for a teacher to provide for his family, dress up professionally to go to his classroom five days a week for a month, while having to receive very low monthly compensation. That is why we pay our instructors between $450 – $650 USD per month. 

A teacher with an educational level of the 3rd cycle of basic education will receive, according to his seniority (3 to 26 years) a base salary of 13,000 gourdes that scales to 14.333 Haitian Gourdes ($124 – $137 USD).

For a teacher having made the “École Normale d’instituteur” (Teacher’s Normal School), the base salary is 20,000 gourdes that scales to 29.282 gourdes according to years of service ($191 – $280 USD). Our program pays teachers $450. 

For a teacher holding a bac +3 + (CAPED) acting as director on the 1st and 2nd cycle of fundamental school, basic salary is 21,038 to 40,132 Haitian Gourdes according to years of service ($201 – $384 USD. Our program pays them $500. 

For a teacher who holds a master’s or doctorate, the basic salary will be 43,000 to 57,000 Gdes according to years of service. (Note that less than 10% of the 1,000 teachers in Haiti hold a master, and they are even less numerous to have a doctorate). ($411 – $545 USD) Our program pays them $575.

From teachers to the school principal, the salary starts from 20,900 Haitian gourdes –41,800 gourdes ($200 – $400). Although that is what we can afford to pay, it is very difficult for a teacher to provide for his family, dress up professionally to report to his classroom five days a week for a month, and having to receive a very low monthly compensation. We would like to pay them better salaries. We need your help to treat them better financially.
